Care Tip: Dangers in our Waterways
Blue
Green Algae
A reader wrote in concerned about the threat of Blue
Green Algae in our waterways, so I thought I'd do a little research*:
Q: What
are blue-green algae?
They are single-celled photosynthetic organisms that live
in our waterways.
Q: Where
are they likely to be found?
Although they can be found in salt water, the most common dangerous
varieties are most commonly found in stagnant bodies of water
Q: What
are the symptoms to watch for?
Depending on the type of blue-green algae and the amount
ingested by the animal, symptoms can range from hypersalivation,
regurgitation, diarrhea, seizures and even death. In
fact, animals ingesting sufficient amounts of toxic algae
often
die within 45 minutes.
Q: Which
species can be affected?
All species are at risk, including livestock, wildlife, dogs
and humans.
Q:
How can we avoid blue-green algae?
Easy: Stay away from still water,
especially in the warmer months. If you suspect that your
pet may be affected by blue-green algae consult your veterinarian
immediately.

Free
Pet Care services for the elderly and disabled

The Wishbone
Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that provides free pet
care to elderly and disabled pet owners in Melbourne and soon in
Sydney. As an animal welfare organisation, it's hard to find funding
to keep doing what we do. So to ensure the long-term life of the
Foundation, we are establishing a grooming and doggie daycare centre
called WISHBONE CANINE CARE.
The centre will
be opening next month on North Road in Ormond, in a shopfront/warehouse
we have secured for this purpose. Clients will be able to leave their
pooches with us to be washed, groomed, walked and taken care of for
the day. Services will eventually include puppy pre-school and prep-school
classes and the like. The business will enable us to drive profits
into the Foundation, and have a lot of fun while we're at it!
The centre will
also serve for volunteer training purposes and allow those volunteers
who have not been lucky enough to find a client yet, to come in and
visit and get a good dose of puppy luvin' whenever they choose!
There's a lot
of work to be done before we can open and we could really use some
help. We are in desperate need of a hydrobath, grooming table, dryer,
toys, bedding, bowls and toys for our four-legged clients.
Click
here to register your interest by email, and let us know how
you can help. Your support will be greatly appreciated... and if
you supply us with your logo, we'd be only too happy to promote
your brand on our new website.

Is
your pet making you sick?
[Sponsored Article]
The
problem could be in the air you breathe
Your pets can
make you sick by contributing to indoor airborne particles that you
and your family breathe every day, and every night!. But why is indoor
air quality relevant to you?
- You probably
spend 90 per cent of your time indoors
- Studies
indicate that indoor air pollution may be two to five times higher
and occasionally more than 100 times higher than outdoor levels
- Indoor air
pollution has been identified as one of the top five urgent environmental
risks to public health
Unfortunately,
pet allergens, along with mould, pollen, smoke, house dust mites
and carbon monoxide are some of the most common contributors to air
pollution, often exceeding acceptable levels.
Air quality
is particularly important for:
- 2.2
million Australians with asthma
Asthma
is the most common cause of hospital admissions for children aged
between 5 and 14, and is one of the top 10 reasons for seeing a GP
- 1
in 3 people who suffer from allergies
Allergies cause a wide range of symptoms, which range from hayfever (allergic
rhinitis) and eczema to potentially life threatening allergic reactions known
as anaphylaxis. Around one in five Australians will develop hayfever (allergic
rhinitis) or eczema.
- all
people that care about staying well
Poor indoor air can cause healthy people to experience lethargy, lack of
concentration, dizziness and headaches. As a result, non-allergy and non-asthma
sufferers purchase 40 per cent of all air purifiers.
 Blueair
in-room air purifiers
Blueair
in-room air purifiers, available in Australia for the first
time, deliver powerful indoor air cleaning for the home, office
or classroom.
Blueair
in-room air purifiers gently draw in dirty air, trap airbourne
particles and diffuse clean air throughout the room, purifying
any room up to 63 square meters.
Using
patented HEPASilent filter technology, (exclusive
to Blueair) the purifiers combine mechanical
filtration with electronic precipitator technology to trap 99.97
per cent of airborne allergens and
lung damaging pollutants, even as small as one thousandth of a millimeter
or 0.1 microns including dust and dust mites; smoke and soot;
bacteria and viruses; pollen and mould spores and textile fibres
and pet allergens. |

Blueair in-room
air purifiers are environmentally friendly and has won numerous awards
for design and performance
Pricing,
Sizing & Availability
Blueair in-room air purifiers are available in selected Harvey Norman
and David Jones stores. The recommended retail price of Blueair in-room
Air Purifiers ranges from $1095 to $1450, depending on the model. Available
in three
models (402, 501, 601), Blueair units are versatile, portable and
easy to fit into most spaces, and hold a 5-year limited warranty
in Australia.
